Leslie Buck, Designer of Iconic Coffee Cup, Dies at 87

By MARGALIT FOX

It was for decades the most enduring piece of ephemera in New York City and is still among the most recognizable. Trim, blue and white, it fits neatly in the hand, sized so its contents can be downed in a New York minute. It is as vivid an emblem of the city as the Statue of Liberty, beloved of property masters who need to evoke Gotham at a glance in films and on television.

It is, of course, the Anthora, the cardboard cup of Grecian design that has held New Yorkers’ coffee securely for nearly half a century. Introduced in the 1960s, the Anthora was long made by the hundreds of millions annually, nearly every cup destined for the New York area.

A pop-cultural totem, the Anthora has been enshrined in museums; its likeness has adorned tourist memorabilia like T-shirts and ceramic mugs. Like many once-celebrated artifacts, though, the cup may now be endangered, the victim of urban gentrification.

The Anthora seems to have been here forever, as if bestowed by the gods at the city’s creation. But in fact, it was created by man — one man in particular, a refugee from Nazi Europe named Leslie Buck.

Mr. Buck, a retired paper-cup company executive, died on Monday, at 87, at his home on Long Island, in Glen Cove. The cause was complications of Parkinson’s disease, his son Robert said. Mr. Buck, previously a longtime resident of Syosset, N.Y., also had a home in Delray Beach, Fla.

The Anthora has spawned a flock of imitations by competitors over the years, but it was first designed by Mr. Buck for the Sherri Cup Company in Kensington, Conn.

Mr. Buck’s cup was blue, with a white meander ringing the top and bottom; down each side was a drawing of the Greek vase known as an amphora. (“Anthora” comes from “amphora,” as filtered through Mr. Buck’s Eastern European accent, his son said.) Some later imitators depict fluted white columns; others show a discus thrower.

On front and back, Mr. Buck emblazoned the Anthora with three steaming golden coffee cups. Above them, in lettering that suggests a Classical inscription, was the Anthora’s very soul — the motto. It has appeared in many variant texts since then; Mr. Buck’s original, with its welcome intimations of tenderness, succor and humility, was simply this:

We Are Happy

To Serve You.

Though the Anthora no longer dominates the urban landscape as it once did, it can still be found at diners, delis and food carts citywide, a squat, stalwart island in a sea of tall, grande and venti. On the street, it warms the harried hands of pedestrians. Without the Anthora, “Law & Order” could scarcely exist.

Laszlo Büch was born on Sept. 20, 1922, to a Jewish family in Khust, then in Czechoslovakia. (It is today in Ukraine.) His parents were killed by the Nazis during World War II; Laszlo himself survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

After the war, Mr. Buck made his way to New York, where he Americanized his name and ran an import-export business with his brother, Eugene, who had also survived the camps. In the late 1950s or thereabouts, the brothers started Premier Cup, a paper-cup manufacturer in Mount Vernon, N.Y.

Leslie Buck joined Sherri Cup, then a startup, in the mid-’60s. Originally the company’s sales manager (for a time, he was its entire sales force), he later became its director of marketing.

Sherri was keen to crack New York’s hot-cup market. Since many of the city’s diners were owned by Greeks, Mr. Buck hit on the idea of a Classical cup in the colors of the Greek flag. Though he had no formal training in art, he executed the design himself. It was an instant success.

Mr. Buck made no royalties from the cup, but he did so well in sales commissions that it hardly mattered, his son said. On his retirement from Sherri in 1992, the company presented Mr. Buck with 10,000 specially made Anthoras, printed with a testimonial inscription.

Besides his son, Robert, and brother, Eugene, Mr. Buck is survived by his wife, the former Ella Farkas, whom he married in 1949; two daughters, Beverly Eisenoff and Linda Rush; and four grandchildren.

In recent years, with the gentrification of the city and its brew, demand for the humble Anthora has waned. In 1994, Sherri sold 500 million of the cups, as The New York Times reported afterward. In 2005, the Solo Cup Company, into which Sherri had been absorbed, was selling about 200 million cups a year, The Times reported.

Today, Solo no longer carries the Anthora as a stock item, making it only on request. Other companies still turn out versions of the cup, though not in the quantities of its 20th-century heyday.

But given the tenacious traditionalism of many locals (“Avenue of the Americas,” anyone?), it is safe to assume that the Anthora and its heirs will endure, at least for a while, in the city’s steadfast precincts. For some time to come, on any given day, somewhere a New Yorker will be cradling the cup, with its crisp design and snug white lid, the stuff of life inside.

THE ACID MOTHER'S TEMPLE
From Japan, Psychedelic Care and Feeding
By Adam Strider as told to Jon Pareles.

Psychedelia was alive and doused in reverb when the Acid Mothers Temple performed at the Knitting Factory on Wednesday night. It’s a band that has chosen its historical era and inhabits it completely, sporting shoulder-length hair and making a mighty noise — hypnotic, cavernous, and often frenetic — the way bands like Hawkwind and Pink Floyd did four decades ago. The difference is that the Acid Mothers Temple covers a broader spectrum than any individual predecessor. They revive an entire era, not a favorite band.

In good hippie style, the Acid Mothers Temple keeps everything amorphous. Founded in Japan in 1995 by the guitarist Kawabata Makoto, and frequently changing its full name and lineup since then, the band’s current incarnation is as a four-man version called the Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. It includes Mr. Makoto, Shimura Koji on drums, Tsuyama Atsushi on bass and lead vocals — which sometimes use the eerie multiple tones of throat singing — and Higashi Hiroshi on the analog synthesizer, which sends glissando notes whizzing skyward like hallucinated auras. With two additional musicians, but under the same name, the group just released an album, “In 0 to Infinity” (Important Records).

Its set spanned the primal and the convoluted, the subdued and the manic. There was hopped-up, synthesizer-topped garage-rock and a slowly building, waltzing dirge. There was scurrying, stop-start improvisation — with gibberish lead vocals and Mr. Atsushi’s cackling laugh — and an Asian-inflected drone that took on a ritualistic gravity. There was a majestic two-chord march topped with Mr. Makoto’s zooming, gnashing lead guitar.

For the peak of the set, there was a stately piece in which a pealing guitar line seemed to be simply repeating, like a mantra. But it actually concealed meter shifts and the gathering activity of Mr. Atsushi’s quick-fingered bass, which ultimately accelerated through the entire band. By the end of it, Mr. Makoto was swinging his guitar by the neck, then hung it on equipment dangling from the ceiling, generating untamed feedback as the rest of the band hurtled with him toward a frantic communal anarchy. He retrieved it for the encore, an implacable midtempo riff and drone abetting one final freakout for guitar and synthesizer.

Yes, the set was a period piece, a trippy throwback. But its effect had little to do with nostalgia. The psychedelic progenitors found ways to completely envelop a listener in the molten moment, and the Acid Mothers Temple, with skill and spark, demonstrates how well they still work.

Acid Mothers Temple is to appear on Friday at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia; on Saturday at Ottobar in Baltimore; and on Sunday at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, N.C.; acidmothers.com.

Ken - your link below didn't work - I think this one does.
It is a nice article, despite a few minor inaccuracies. First off: the light ain't a pale ale, by any means - I think it closer to a lager. Secondly, the dark certainly ain't a porter - it's a dark ale. (Why do non-beer drinkers always assume dark means stout or porter?). Thirdly - while the tv is rarely turned on, its use is not quite as rare as 'when one of the local teams is in the championship.'

This joke just came in from my friend Keith Glassman from Israel..

IRS Audit

The IRS sends their auditor (a nasty little man) to audit a synagogue.
The auditor is doing all the checks, and then turns to the Rabbi and says, "I noticed that you buy a lot of candles."

"Yes," answered the Rabbi.

"Well, Rabbi, what do you do with the candle drippings?" he asked.

"A good question," noted the Rabbi. "We actually save them up. When we have enough, we send them back to the candle maker and every now and then, they send us a free box of candles."

"Oh," replied the auditor somewhat disappointed that his question actually had a practical answer. So he thought he'd try another question, in his obnoxious way...

"Rabbi, what about all these matzo purchases? What do you do with the crumbs from the matzo?

"Ah, yes," replied the Rabbi calmly, "we actually collect up the crumbs, we send them in a box back to the manufacturer and every now and then, they send a box of matzo balls."

"Oh," replied the auditor, thinking hard how to fluster the Rabbi.

"Well, Rabbi," he went on, "what do you do with all the foreskins from the circumcisions?"

"Yes, here too, we do not waste," answered the Rabbi. "What we do is save up all the foreskins, and when we have enough we actually send them to the IRS ."

"To the IRS ?" questioned the auditor in disbelief.

"Ah, yes," replied the Rabbi, "directly to The IRS ...And about once a year, they send us a little prick like you."

I was sad to hear of John Storm Roberts' passing.. He was a famous musicologist and his obit was in today's NY Times.. Although I never met him in person, I have a John Storm Roberts story..

About 20 years ago (1990?), I was listening to a weekend reggae show on WLIB-AM, when all of a sudden comes this sound.. beautiful, high-pitched harmonies with a simple, slow, unbelievably cool beatbox in the background.. I was stunned.. it was one of those magical "radio moments" and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.. I had to find out who was playing the song.. I called the station and John picked up the phone.. he must have been a guest DJ that day.. He told me the song was called "Momma Mo Akoma Ntutuhe" by the Genesis Gospel Singers, from an out of print compilation lp of music from Ghana called "The Guitar & The Gun".. you can check it out here.. http://www.amazon.com/Momma-Mo-Akoma-Ntutu/dp/B0010C3QM6

He also said he'd tape it for me but I was sure he'd forget, so I started looking for the lp at the record stores in town, totally unsuccessfully.. Sure enough, a few weeks later, John sent me a tape of the lp.. with xeroxes of the liner notes, as well.. I flipped when I received it, of course, and still have the cassette to this day.. Don't forget, this was in the old times, when someone had to tape the album in real time, so this must have taken him 45 minutes to do, let alone package it up and mail it to me.. no dragging and dropping mp3 files.. or emailing, of course..

Years later, I started following John's reggae articles in The Beat Magazine and I also remember seeing his name in the Voice when he used to put on the "Bob Marley Video Tributes" at Webster Hall in the '90's... I always remembered that he hooked me up with that tape, and totally went the extra nine yards to get it to me.. I'm assuming he put many other people in touch with music they were passionate about..

Thanks for sending me the tape John, may you rest in peace..

Here's the obit..

John Storm Roberts, World-Music Scholar, Dies at 73
By MARGALIT FOX
John Storm Roberts, an English-born writer, record producer and independent scholar whose work explored the rich, varied and often surprising ways in which the popular music of Africa and Latin America informed that of the United States, died on Nov. 29 in Kingston, N.Y. He was 73 and lived in Kingston.
The cause was complications of a blood clot, his wife, Anne Needham, said.
Long before the term was bandied about, Mr. Roberts was listening to, seeking out and reporting on what is now called world music. He wrote several seminal books on the subject for a general readership, most notably “Black Music of Two Worlds” (Praeger, 1972) and “The Latin Tinge: The Impact of Latin American Music on the United States” (Oxford University, 1979).
“Black Music of Two Worlds” examines the cross-pollination — in both directions — between Africa and the Americas, from the influence of African music on jazz, blues, salsa and samba to the popularity in Nigeria and Zaire of American artists like James Brown and Jimi Hendrix.
In writing the book, Mr. Roberts sought to connect a diffuse web of existing studies by ethnomusicologists. The studies typically appraised local musical traditions while ignoring the reach of Africa as a whole.
“It was like a landscape with a large number of artesian wells, and nothing linking them,” he told The New York Times in 1992. “And I conceived of ‘Black Music of Two Worlds’ being more like canals joining.”
In “The Latin Tinge,” Mr. Roberts trained his ear on the influence of musical forms like tango, rumba, mambo and salsa on a wide range of American pop styles, among them ragtime, Tin Pan Alley, rhythm and blues, jazz, country and rock.
Reviewing the book in The New York Times Book Review, Robert Palmer called it a “painstaking, pioneering” work, adding: “ ‘The Latin Tinge’ is an important addition to the literature of American music.”
John Anthony Storm Roberts was born in London on Feb. 24, 1936. His father, an accountant who often traveled abroad on business, brought him records that were then scarcely available in England: jazz and blues from the United States, Brazilian music by way of Portugal and much else. By the time he was in his early teens, John was irretrievably mesmerized by the sounds that leapt from his turntable.
A polyglot who came to speak more than half a dozen languages, including Swahili, Mr. Roberts received a bachelor’s degree in modern languages from Oxford University. In the mid-1960s he spent several years in Kenya as a reporter and editor on The East African Standard, a regional newspaper. Returning to London, he was a radio producer with the BBC World Service.
Mr. Roberts moved to the United States in 1970, becoming an editor on the periodical Africa Report. He was later a freelance journalist, contributing articles on world music to The Village Voice and other publications.
In the early 1980s, Mr. Roberts and Ms. Needham started Original Music, a mail-order company that distributed world-music books and records. In those pre-Internet days, Americans outside big cities found these almost as hard to come by as young Mr. Roberts had in postwar England.
In business for nearly two decades, Original Music also released many well-received albums of its own. Among them are “The Sound of Kinshasa,” featuring Zairian guitar music; “Africa Dances,” an anthology of music from more than a dozen countries; and “Songs the Swahili Sing,” devoted to the music of Kenya, an aural kaleidoscope of African, Arab and Indian sounds.
Mr. Roberts’s first marriage, to Jane Lloyd, ended in divorce. Besides Ms. Needham, whom he married in 1981, he is survived by two children from his first marriage, Stephen and Alice Roberts; three stepchildren, Melissa, Elizabeth and Stephen Keiper; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
His other books include “Latin Jazz: The First of the Fusions, 1880s to Today” (Schirmer, 1999) and “A Land Full of People: Life in Kenya Today” (Praeger, 1968).
In choosing what to release on the Original Music label, Mr. Roberts did not disdain modern, popular numbers: by his lights, a song simply had to be good. This distinguished him from musicological purists who, in ceaseless quest for the authentic, recorded only material seemingly untouched by modernity.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times in 1987, Mr. Roberts illuminated his selection process.
“I don’t care how esoteric it is, but it’s got to be terrific,” he said. “Not this ‘you-can’t-hear-it-and-it’s-terribly-performed-but-it’s-really-very-interesting-because-it’s-the-only-winkle-gathering-song-to-come-out-of-southeastern-Sussex’ attitude.”

What Facebook Can't Give You
Over 52 Years, These Men Have Evolved Into Movers and Shakers—Together

By KATHERINE ROSMAN
Before there was Facebook, there was the Wednesday 10.

In 1957, as men in their late 20s, they began meeting—initially over breakfast, then over dinners held at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel or at the Harvard Club in midtown Manhattan. Few were born to means. Many were sons of immigrants. Most went on to become luminaries in their fields—presidents of television networks, partners at banks, editors of magazines.

On occasion, they shared their influence with one another. When member Mort Janklow made a career switch from corporate attorney to literary agent, a fellow member, columnist William Safire, offered himself as a famous first client. When Robert Menschel, a senior director at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., was considering deals involving large consumer companies such as Procter & Gamble, he would pick the brain of fellow club member Ed Meyer, the former chief executive of Grey Advertising.

In a day when "social network" is a buzz term from colleges to board rooms, the members of Wednesday 10 show the benefits of old-fashioned networking. "We were all young kids starting out, and it is easy when you are so involved in building your career to lose touch with other people who are outside your field," says Mr. Menschel, who has been at Goldman Sachs for 55 years. "It helped me to understand why other people do what they do—which is important in life and in business. You don't learn anything from talking to sameness."

The Wednesday 10 comprised, at various points, more than 20 men; the goal was a number small enough to maintain intimacy yet large enough to ensure that at least 10 members would show up for each of the monthly Wednesday-night meetings. No more than two representatives of any one industry were permitted. The idea was to combat insularity, to keep the men connected to people and events outside their own professions.

Last Wednesday, in a prewar Manhattan duplex, the membership met for the first time since the death of the group's founder, Mr. Safire. At a sit-down dinner of lobster pot pie, short-ribs stroganoff and fall-vegetable slaw, 16 of the group's members engaged in spirited discussion about the economy, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the friendship they have cultivated during the past 52 years.

The members bantered like brothers as they greeted one another over cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, handshakes and a few hugs. "How old are you Larry?" Lawrence Grossman, the former president of NBC News and PBS, was asked as he walked into the reception.

*Adler dropped out
"What the hell kind of question is that?" Mr. Grossman replied. Turns out he was born in 1931, making him the youngest member.

"I am the oldest," said Charles Sigety, 87, a former nursing-home owner whose family has significant real estate holdings. Later, he pointed out another distinction. "I'm probably the only gentile here tonight," he said.

"We've been meaning to talk to you about that," replied Mr. Menschel. (The group is about 75% Jewish.)

By today's definition, the Wednesday 10's idea of diversity isn't expansive. "They're anti- women," Barbara Walters says. When she worked in public relations with Mr. Safire in the 1950s, she would rib him about the all-male make-up of the group. "No women!" he would respond, Ms. Walters says.

"In 1957, it didn't occur to us to include women," says Mr. Menschel. "If we formed it today, it wouldn't occur to us not to include women." When asked about the homogeneity, other members point to the many banquets that included wives and their invitations to Ms. Walters, Gloria Steinem and the late "Feminine Mystique" author Betty Friedan, each of whom addressed a Wednesday 10 meeting as a guest. Ms. Walters says she recalls nothing from the meeting she attended. Nor does Ms. Steinem. "It may not please them to know that I don't remember," she says. "But I would urge them to change the name to the Wednesday Men's 10."

Journal Communitydiscuss“ Regardless of your upbringing or social status - the opportunity and ability to network exists at all levels of class to empower yourself to excel. ”
—Joe Maynard The advantages to membership were many. Mr. Janklow secured Mr. Safire lucrative contracts and also scored book deals for other members: Edward Bleier, a former top executive at ABC and Warner Bros., wrote "Thanksgiving," a guide to and history of the holiday; George Lang, who owned restaurants including Café des Artistes, chronicled his journey from a Nazi work camp to the height of New York's culinary world in "Nobody Knows the Truffles I've Seen"; and Mr. Menschel wrote "Markets, Mobs & Mayhem: a Modern Look at the Madness of Crowds." Mr. Safire wrote the forewords to the books of Messrs. Bleier and Menschel.

Mr. Menschel was the chairman of the board of trustees of the Museum of Modern Art from 2005 to 2007. He encouraged curators to attend the one-man photography exhibits of Wednesday 10er Marvin E. Newman, who shot for Esquire, Sports Illustrated and Life magazine. Mr. Newman's work is featured in permanent collections at MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. When members get sick, they call member Mortimer Lacher, a pioneer in lymphoma research who has been on the staff of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since 1961. "I'm the house doctor," he says.

By almost every account, Mr. Safire founded the group after one of his superiors at public-relations agency Tex McCrary Inc. asked him to round up some of New York City's most promising young businessmen. The rumor was that Ruder Finn Inc., a competing publicity company, had a connection to the Young Presidents' Organization, a networking group of business leaders.

'Our Own Organization'
One of the Tex McCrary executives said, "We need our own organization which has a purpose but might feed business to the firm," recalls Mr. Bleier, who was also a Tex McCrary employee.

Mr. Safire shared the plan with Mr. Lang after the two men worked together on a 1956 reception hosted at the Waldorf-Astoria (Mr. Lang was assistant banquet manager) for Princess Grace and Prince Rainier by the Overseas Press Club (Mr. Safire handled the PR).

The Wednesday 10, shown at a 1960s banquet with their dates, began meeting 52 years ago.
They each invited friends and acquaintances. Over time, Mr. Lang says, the group helped him to understand the motivations and concerns of powerful men who worked in New York City's core industries—the type of men who were his customers. "Through the Wednesday 10, you begin to understand the world," says Mr. Lang, 85. "I knew about restaurants but not about Wall Street or show business."

To begin the meetings, each man gave an update on his life. Impending marriages and expected babies were nodded to, but the thrust of the discussion centered on career development. "It was a professional support system," says Mr. Meyer, 82. By the end of each meeting, he had a snapshot of what was going on in the realms of law, media, art, finance, real estate, public service and cancer research. "It was like reading a newspaper cover to cover," he says.

Distinguished Guests
For the first 15 years or so, the men invited one guest per meeting to brief them on the issues of the day and answer questions. As the members' careers got traction, the profile of the people to whom they had access grew. Over the years, the roster included CBS News's Mike Wallace, Public Theater founder Joseph Papp, former New York City Mayor John Lindsay, accused Soviet spy Alger Hiss and Roy Cohn, who was a prosecutor during the espionage trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and an aide to Senator Joseph McCarthy during his anti-Communism hearings.

On Friday, Nov. 19, 1971, the group traveled to Washington, D.C., for a black-tie dinner at Blair House. The highlights included a speech on domestic policy delivered by Donald Rumsfeld, who was a Cabinet-level counselor to President Richard Nixon. (Mr. Safire was by then a White House speechwriter.) "I rarely got into black tie, but Bill said it was important," Mr. Rumsfeld says.

Once Mr. Safire moved to Washington, D.C., the group scaled back the frequency of its meetings to twice a year and stopped inviting guests so the members could spend their time together reconnecting. At one gathering last year, though, the group gave special dispensation to a doctor of gerontology.

"I don't know why someone thought that was appropriate for this group," says Mr. Bleier, 79.

'Daddy's Ideas'
The men had hoped their sons would create an adjunct group that would one day assume the Wednesday 10 mantle but none took the initiative. "Daddy's ideas are not the ones children tend to take on," says Mr. Menschel.

Mr. Safire's is the club's eighth death, according to Mr. Bleier. A few decades ago, one member dropped out—Bill Adler, a former publishing entrepreneur. "It was getting to be a very self-admiring group, and it lost appeal for me," says Mr. Adler, who also says that the idea for the club was his, not Mr. Safire's. The rest of the membership disputes that contention.

At the apartment of Jenifer and George Lang last Wednesday, the men sat around a large rectangular table set with china, flowers and printed menus. (Mrs. Lang cooked the entire meal but disappeared at dinner time.) The formal discussion began when member Robert K. Lifton, the former president of the American Jewish Congress, was asked to address the peace process in the Middle East. "I see nothing changing in the next five years" unless the interested parties change their patterns of conduct, Mr. Lifton said, after giving his impressions on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he has known for 20 years. The situation in Afghanistan? "Quagmire," Mr. Lifton said.

"I'd like to hear a little about the economy from our financial guru," said the photographer Mr. Newman, in reference to Mr. Menschel.

Ed Meyer, above, shakes hands with Marshall Loeb (back to camera).
"The question is, what is going to get 15 million people back to work," Mr. Menschel said. "It won't be big companies. It's going to be driven by the 'mom and pop economy' and that takes a long time."

During the economic discussion, Mr. Menschel had to weather some Goldman Sachs-bashing. Dr. Lacher called one of Mr. Menschel's colleagues a "bozo." Stanley Bartels, a banker who made his career at smaller establishments, called Goldman a "monster," and Mr. Menschel rolled his eyes.

Most of the meal was spent discussing Mr. Safire and the group he built. James Rosenfield, former president of CBS Television Network, looked around the table and gave in to a moment of wistful congratulations. "Each of us started from zero with a common denominator—we were ambitious and hard-working," he said. "And I look around and there isn't a single guy in the group who wasn't a winner in his own world."

"This group is amazing in its longevity," added Dr. Lacher.

The brandy had been served, so Mr. Menschel said, "Let's drink to that."

Composer Vic Mizzy dies at 93
Wrote music for 'Addams Family,' 'Green Acres'
By JON BURLINGAME <http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=bio&peopleID=1218>
Vic Mizzy, who composed the indelible theme music for "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres" died Saturday in Los Angeles. He was 93.

For the "The Addams Family" theme, which became a long-remembered part of '60s pop culture, Mizzy played the harpsichord and sang the vocal parts (overdubbing his own voice three times) and coached the actors during the main-title sequence (including on-camera finger-snapping by the actors). The equally iconic "Green Acres" theme was performed by stars Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor. Mizzy also wrote all the underscore for both series. His theme for "Addams" was reprised in the 1990s feature films.

Although he was most famous for his sitcom music, Mizzy also had a number of top-20 hits in the late 1930s, '40s and '50s when he was active as a New York-based songwriter. Doris Day sang the most popular, "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time," in 1945.

Other hit songs included "There's a Faraway Look in Your Eye" and "Three Little Sisters," both sung by the Andrews Sisters; "Take It Easy," "Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes," "The Whole World Is Singing My Song," "Choo'n Gum," "The Jones Boy," "With a Hey and a Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho" and others.

His TV career began around 1959, with music for "Shirley Temple's Storybook" and the themes for "Moment of Fear," "Klondike" and "Kentucky Jones."

"Addams" and "Green Acres" began a run of 1960s and '70s sitcom themes that also included "The Pruitts of Southampton," "The Double Life of Henry Phyfe," "Captain Nice," "The Don Rickles Show" and "Temperature's Rising." He also wrote underscores for TV's "Richard Boone Show" and "Quincy" along with several TV movies including "Terror on the 40th Floor."

His film scores included the William Castle films "The Night Walker" and "The Busy Body"; five Don Knotts films including "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken," "The Shakiest Gun in the West," "The Reluctant Astronaut," "The Love God?" and "How to Frame a Figg"; and others including "The Caper of the Golden Bulls," "Don't Make Waves" and "Did You Hear the One About the Traveling Saleslady?"

Mizzy was born in Brooklyn and attended New York U. He played accordion and piano as a child and was virtually self-taught as a composer and orchestrator. Many of his song hits happened while he was serving in the Navy during WWII.

Survivors include a daughter, a brother and two grandchildren. Another daughter died in 1995.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills, Calif.

Pianist known for movie theme songs dies at 88
By MELISSA NELSON
Associated Press Writer

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Famed 1960s-era pianist Art Ferrante, who teamed with Lou Teicher in a series of hit records based on movie theme songs, has died at his South Florida home. He was 88.

The duo's longtime manager, Scott W. Smith, said Monday that Ferrante died Saturday of natural causes in Longboat Key, about 60 miles south of Tampa.

Along with Teicher, Ferrante recorded themes from movies including "Exodus," "The Apartment," "Lawrence of Arabia," and "Cleopatra." They also recorded "Tonight," from "West Side Story" and the theme from "Midnight Cowboy."

Ferrante and Teicher, known as "The Movie Theme Team," performed together for 40 years after meeting as children at the Juilliard School in New York.

Smith, who managed the duo for 38 years, said Ferrante played the piano every day.

"Until about four weeks ago he was still playing," Smith said. "He was an unbelievable, incredible pianist. His hands, they moved liked he was still 20 years old. He had other (aging) problems, but playing the piano was not one of them."

When Teicher died in 2008 at age 83, Ferrante told The Associated Press that the pair turned friendship into 40 years of artistic and business success.

The men played 9-foot concert pianos while facing each other on stage.

"No one was more blessed than I to have Lou Teicher as my best friend since we met at the Juilliard School Of Music at the ages of 9 and 6," Ferrante said.

"Although we were two individuals, at the twin-pianos our brains worked as one. Lou was certainly one of the world's most gifted pianists," he said.

They recorded more than 150 albums and dozens of singles, selling more than 88 million records worldwide and earning 22 gold and platinum records. They also made more than 200 television appearances, some with personalities including Ed Sullivan, Dick Clark and Johnny Carson. They were White House guests of Presidents John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Their annual Ferrante & Teicher Tour ended in 1989 after more than 5,200 concerts.

Ferrante is survived by his wife, daughter and twin granddaughters.

Smith said private memorial services will likely be held in Longboat Key, where both Ferrante and Teicher moved in the mid-1980s after spending decades based in New York.
